Housing

You know your way around your own home – now let's learn how to talk about it in Spanish: your house, your flat, the rooms, the furniture.

House or flat

la casa is the house, la habitación the room. For "flat/apartment" there are two equally common words: el piso and el apartamento – depending on the region, you'll hear one or the other.

The rooms

The most important rooms: la cocina (the kitchen), el baño (the bathroom), el dormitorio (the bedroom), el salón or la sala de estar (both: the living room), el comedor (the dining room). Plus el garaje (the garage), la terraza (the terrace), el pasillo (the hallway) and el jardín (the garden).

Furniture and objects

Inside you'll find la mesa (the table), la silla (the chair), la cama (the bed), el sofá (the sofa), el armario (the wardrobe), el sillón (the armchair), la estantería (the shelf) and el escritorio (the desk). Plus la puerta (the door), la ventana (the window), la ducha (the shower) and el lavabo (the sink).

hay – what a home has in it

To say what's in a home, hay is all you need: En la casa hay una cocina. (There's a kitchen in the house.) En el salón hay un sofá. (There's a sofa in the living room.)

estar – where something is

To say exactly where something is, you need estar: La mesa está en el comedor. (The table is in the dining room.) La televisión está en el salón. (The TV is in the living room.)

The small difference

Together they give you the full picture: En el salón hay un sofá. (There's a sofa in the living room – new information.) El sofá está al lado de la ventana. (That particular sofa is next to the window – its exact position.)

Housing and household

vivir means to live, limpiar to clean, lavar to wash. If you don't buy your own place, you can alquilar (rent) – and for that you pay el alquiler (the rent).

A few more words

When looking for a place, you often read bien comunicado (well connected) or mal comunicado (poorly connected). Also technically important: el aire acondicionado (air conditioning), la calefacción (heating) and la electricidad (electricity).
