Ordering

The waiter usually asks ¿Qué quiere tomar? You simply say what you would like and add por favor: Un café con leche, por favor. Just as good: Quiero un café con leche, por favor. or Para mí, un café con leche. – para mí means "for me" and is especially handy when two of you are ordering.

Reacting to questions

After you order, you often hear ¿Algo más? (Anything else?) or ¿Para beber? (And to drink?). If you want something else: Sí, un agua, por favor. If not: No, nada más, gracias.

The bill and paying

At the end you call the waiter and say La cuenta, por favor. You ask about the price with ¿Cuánto es? The answer sounds like this: Son doce euros con cincuenta. – the cents come after con.

The waiter often asks ¿En efectivo o con tarjeta? You answer briefly: Con tarjeta, por favor. or En efectivo. You can also ask yourself: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? When you hand over the money, you say Aquí tiene. (Here you are.)

Typical mistakes

la carta is the menu, la cuenta is the bill – at the end you want la cuenta. And you don't answer ¿En efectivo o con tarjeta? with sí, but with one of the two options.

Examples

  • — ¿Qué quiere tomar? — Para mí, un café con leche, por favor.
  • — ¿Algo más? — No, nada más, gracias.
