Joining sentences with y

Single sentences sound choppy: Vivo en Panamá. Estudio español. With y (and) you join two pieces of information into one sentence: Vivo en Panamá y estudio español. With three pieces of information, use a comma and put y only before the last one: Me llamo Ana, soy de México y vivo en Colón.

You leave out yo – the verb form already shows that you are talking about yourself.

A contrast with pero

If two things don't go together, join them with pero (but) and a comma before it: Soy alemán, pero vivo en Panamá.

How a profile is built

A simple order helps: name and age → origin and home → work or studies → what you like. A profile could look like this: Me llamo Tom y tengo 31 años.
