How to introduce yourself

1. Greeting: Hola. or Buenos días. 2. Name: Me llamo Tom. or Soy Tom. 3. Origin and home: Soy de Alemania, pero vivo en Madrid. 4. Age, job or studies: Tengo treinta años. Soy profesor. 5. Something you like: Me gusta la música. 6. Closing: Mucho gusto. or, in a message, ¡Hasta pronto!

The right form of address

In a language course or among young people you say Hola and ask back with ¿Y tú? With your new boss or older people, Buenos días and ¿Y usted? are more polite. You respond to an introduction with Mucho gusto. – or Encantado. / Encantada.

Typical mistakes

The name follows me llamo directly: Me llamo Tom. – not "me llamo es Tom". You give your age with tener: Tengo treinta años. – not "soy treinta años". And you don't need yo in every sentence.

Examples

  • Hola, me llamo Tom. Soy de Alemania. ¿Y tú?
  • Buenos días. Me llamo Tom Becker. ¿Y usted?
  • Tengo treinta años y soy profesor.
