Name means of transport and getting around in Spanish

Here you will learn the key Spanish words for transport, stops and how to say what you travel with.

Transport

The most important means of transport: el coche (the car), el autobús (the bus), el tren (the train), el metro (the metro), el taxi (the taxi), la bicicleta (the bicycle), la moto (the motorbike), el avión (the plane), el barco (the boat) and el ferry (the ferry).

Which means of transport? – ir en

Use ir en + means of transport to say how you travel: Voy en autobús. (I go by bus.) Vamos en tren. (We go by train.) Voy en coche. (I go by car.) Voy en bicicleta. (I go by bike.)

On foot and by bike

Going on foot is the exception: ir andando (to go on foot) – you say Voy andando. or Voy a pie., not "voy en". By bike, though, it works normally with ir en bicicleta: Voy en bicicleta.

Stops and stations

Important places along the way: la parada de autobús (the bus stop), la parada de taxi (the taxi rank), la estación de tren (the train station), la estación de autobús (the bus station), la estación de metro (the metro station), la carretera (the road) and el aparcamiento (the car park).

Getting on and off

Use subir a (to get on) and bajar de (to get off) to say whether you board or leave a vehicle: Subo al autobús. (I get on the bus.) Bajo del tren. (I get off the train.)

At the airport / getting around

At el aeropuerto (the airport) you need el pasaporte (the passport), el billete (the ticket) and la mochila (the backpack). By car you need el carné de conducir (the driving licence). ir a + destination is useful too: Voy al aeropuerto. (I am going to the airport.) Voy al centro. (I am going downtown.) Here a + el becomes al.
