The body

el cuerpo (the body) is made up of many parts: el brazo (the arm), la mano (the hand), el dedo (the finger), la pierna (the leg), el pie (the foot), el dedo del pie (the toe), la rodilla (the knee), el codo (the elbow), el cuello (the neck), la muñeca (the wrist), la espalda (the back) and el estómago (the stomach).

On your face you find el pelo (the hair), el ojo (the eye), la nariz (the nose), la boca (the mouth), el diente (the tooth), la lengua (the tongue), los labios (the lips), la oreja (the ear), la frente (the forehead) and la barba (the beard) – together they make up la cabeza (the head) and la cara (the face). Some people need las gafas (glasses) to see better.

Health and ailments

la salud (health) matters. When you are ill you might say: Tengo fiebre. (I have a fever.) Tengo un resfriado. (I have a cold.) Tengo gripe. (I have the flu.) Tengo tos. (I have a cough.) Then you go to el médico (the doctor) or the el hospital (hospital), wait in la sala de espera (the waiting room) and get la medicina (the medicine) at la farmacia (the pharmacy). In an emergency you dial el teléfono de emergencia (the emergency number) and call la ambulancia (the ambulance).

How are you feeling?

Use estar to say how you feel right now: Estoy bien. (I am fine.) Estoy mal. (I am not well.) Estoy enfermo. (I am ill.) Estoy cansado. (I am tired.) Estoy triste. (I am sad.) Estoy contento. (I am happy.) estar fits here because it describes a temporary state.

When something hurts

Use doler (to hurt) to say what hurts. For one body part it is me duele: Me duele la cabeza. (My head hurts.) Me duele la espalda. (My back hurts.) Me duele el estómago. (My stomach hurts.) For several body parts it is me duelen: Me duelen los pies. (My feet hurt.)

Personal hygiene

Daily hygiene includes ducharse (to shower), lavarse (to wash) and cepillarse los dientes (to brush your teeth). For this you need el jabón (soap), la toalla (the towel), el cepillo de dientes (the toothbrush) and la ducha (the shower).

Appearance and description

You can describe people with alto/bajo (tall/short), guapo/feo (good-looking/ugly), delgado/gordo (slim/fat) and rubio/moreno (blond/dark-haired).
