Choosing a greeting

Greetings are an essential part of everyday communication. In Spanish, the expression you use can depend on the time of day, the situation, and the person you are speaking to.

Asking how someone is

Use «¿Cómo estás?» with a friend and «¿Cómo está usted?» when speaking formally. Simple answers include «Bien, gracias» and «Muy bien, gracias».

Saying goodbye

Alongside «adiós», Spanish uses expressions such as «hasta luego», «hasta mañana», «hasta pronto» and «nos vemos» to indicate when you expect to meet again.
