So what actually is an adverb?

An adverb is a small word that makes a sentence more precise. It can say how often something happens: Siempre desayuno en casa. (I always have breakfast at home.) How something happens: Hablo bien. (I speak well.) How strong or how much something is: Es muy fácil. (It's very easy.) Or when, or at which point in a sequence, something happens: temprano (early), al final (at the end). Some adverbs also connect two statements, like también (also/too) and tampoco (not... either).

muy or mucho?

These two are often confused, but the difference isn't that hard: muy goes before an adjective or adverb: Es muy fácil. mucho, on the other hand, usually goes directly with the verb: Trabajo mucho. (I work a lot.) You don't need the full mucho/mucha/muchos/muchas forms yet – that gets its own grammar lesson later.

The same idea applies to poco (little), bastante (quite a bit/enough), más (more) and menos (less): Tengo poco tiempo. (I have little time.) Quiero más pan, por favor. (I'd like more bread, please.)

bien and mal

bien means well, mal means badly – both tell you how something goes: Hablo bien. Duermo mal. (I sleep badly.)

también and tampoco

With también you add something to a positive statement: También estudio español. (I also study Spanish.) For a negative statement, you use tampoco instead: No trabajo hoy. Tampoco estudio. (I don't work today. I don't study either.)

How often? siempre, normalmente, a veces, nunca

The frequency words are used constantly in everyday life: siempre (always), normalmente (normally), a veces (sometimes), nunca (never) and todos los días (every day). Siempre desayuno en casa. A veces leo por la noche. (Sometimes I read at night.)

A few more useful little words

And then there are a few words you'll keep running into: ya (already), al principio (at the beginning), al final (at the end), entonces (then/so), claro (of course/clearly), por supuesto (of course), nada (nothing), solo (only), tal vez (maybe) and por eso (that's why).
