Name clothes, accessories and colors in Spanish

Here you will learn the key Spanish words for clothes, shoes, accessories and colors – and how to use llevar and ponerse to say what someone is wearing or putting on.

Clothes: el, la or los/las?

Always learn clothing words together with their : la camiseta (the T-shirt), la camisa (the shirt), la falda (the skirt), el jersey (the sweater), el abrigo (the coat), el vestido (the dress), la chaqueta (the jacket), el pijama (the pyjamas).

Some clothes are because they are made of two parts: los pantalones (the trousers), los vaqueros (the jeans).

More useful words: el traje (the suit), el bañador (the swimsuit), el biquini (the bikini), el uniforme (the uniform) and la ropa as the general word for clothes.

Shoes and accessories

los zapatos (the shoes) and los calcetines (the socks) are also . Accessories: el cinturón (the belt), el sombrero (the hat), los guantes (the gloves), la bufanda (the scarf), el gorro (the beanie), el bolso (the handbag).

Jewelry belongs here too: el collar (the necklace) and el anillo (the ring).

Colors

The basic colors: rojo (red), azul (blue), verde (green), amarillo (yellow), naranja (orange), marrón (brown), blanco (white), negro (black), gris (grey) and rosa (pink).

Clothes and colors together

Most color adjectives agree in and number with the clothing item: una camiseta blanca (a white T-shirt), un abrigo negro (a black coat), unos zapatos negros (black shoes). rosa does not change for or : una falda rosa, un vestido rosa.

llevar – what someone is wearing

Use llevar to say what someone is currently wearing: Lleva una camiseta roja. (She/He is wearing a red T-shirt.) Llevo unos pantalones negros. (I am wearing black trousers.)

ponerse – putting something on

ponerse describes the act of putting something on: Me pongo la chaqueta. (I put on the jacket.) Se pone el abrigo. (He/She puts on the coat.)
