Recognising the situation
First, listen for words that give away the situation: Un café, por favor. sounds like a café, ¿Cuánto cuesta esta camiseta? like a shop, ¿Dónde está el baño? like someone looking for a place. With ¿A qué hora ...? it is about a point in time.
People also often say where they are or what they are doing right now – in the present tensetenseThe time form of a verb, for example present, past, or future.: Estoy en el supermercado. Hoy estudiamos los números.
Short reactions
In a conversation, very short answers are often enough: Sí. – No. – Claro. To agree with someone, you say A mí también. or Yo también. – after a negative statement, A mí tampoco. or Yo tampoco.: No me gusta el café. – A mí tampoco.
Making plans
With ¿Qué haces hoy? you ask about plans, with ¿Qué quieres hacer? about wishes. The answer can be very short – just the infinitiveinfinitiveThe basic form of a verb, e.g. hablar, comer or vivir.: ¿Qué quieres hacer? – Ir al cine.
With entonces (so/then) people often draw a small conclusion at the end: A las ocho. Entonces, hasta luego.
Listening tip
You don't need to understand every word. Ask yourself while listening: Where are the people? What is being asked? Which answer fits? You already know numbers, prices and times – here you hear them in the middle of a conversation.
